Tuesday, October 17, 2023 - The Anderson Lighthouse Years
The October program meeting was held at the Harmony Historical Society's History Center at 1943 Open Meadows Road, Ashville, NY at 7 PM. Our guest speaker (and volunteer) Tina Scott talked about the Andersons, a local family who spent years in the Lighthouse Service at lighthouses on the West coast and the Great Lakes during the 1930s. There was a good discussion afterwards about the life of lighthouse keepers, lighthouses and keeper's families. A pleasant evening was had by all. |
Tuesday, Sep. 19, 2023 - Bemus Point-Stow Ferry talk
Our September program meeting was held Tuesday, Sep. 19 at the Harmony Historical Society's History Center at 1943 Open Meadows Road, Ashville, NY at 7 PM. Jay Kuntz spoke about the history of the Bemus Point-Stow ferry while explaining the huge project of repairing the ferry that took place over several years. He also spoke about the book Chris Flanders and he wrote titled "Fairies on the Ferry; Ella's Best Day" and had copies available for purchase. It was a very enjoyable talk about the ferry which has been in operation for over 100 years! |
September 16, 2023 - Living History Fair
From 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, there will be a return to Pioneer and Civil War era located in Blockville, New York. The Towns of Harmony and North Harmony will be caught up in a time warp at 1943 Open Meadows Road where dedicated re-enactors and history specialists will be demonstrating their historic trades. There will be period craftspeople sawing logs, blacksmithing, carving, quilting, tanning, tatting, weaving, playing Old Time music, leatherworking, cooking, and much more. Take a few minutes of your Saturday to witness Living History and tour our grounds, where there is no entrance fee and you can have all the fun you can enjoy! The Harmony-North Harmony History Center will be open to the public. Visit us here at the Harmony Historical Society where we are keeping history alive! |
August 24, 2023 - "Writing for Home: A Chautauqua Soldier’s Messages from War"
The Chautauqua County Historical Society presented "Writing for Home: A Chautauqua Soldier’s Messages from War", by author and historian Rick Barram at HHS to a packed crowd. Barram’s talk was based on his book, Dear Uncles, The Civil War Letters of Arthur McKinstry, a Soldier in the Excelsior Brigade. McKinstry was killed May 6th, 1862 in the Battle of Williamsburg, Virginia and is buried in Fredonia. Mr. Barram spoke of his travels during the war based on letters McKinstry sent home to his uncles. |
July 18, 2023 - "NY to the Netherlands: The Tie That Binds"
The July program meeting was held at the Harmony-North Harmony History Center at Harmony Historical Society on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at 7 pm. We had a full house who listened to Marsha Pownall relate the story of Elwood Hanson, a local soldier killed in WWII and the two families that never forgot him; one in NY and the other in the Netherlands. Marsha brought Elwood's purple heart, family photos and many other heirlooms for our guests. A wonderful evening was spent learning about a local soldier who gave his life for his country and was never forgotten by two families an ocean apart. |
"Chautauqua Obscura, Part 2", June 20, 2023
The Harmony Historical Society's June program meeting was held at the North Harmony Senior Center at 5377 Stow Ferry Road, Stow, NY. Attendees enjoyed a "pot luck" dinner at 6 pm and then listened to our guest speakers Sam Genco and Karen Livsey's tell the tales of "Chautauqua Obscura - Part 2". Sam and Karen never disappoint as they find the most interesting, obscure events that happened in our area and best of all - bring objects for show and tell! If you get a chance to attend their talks, don't miss it. You won't be disappointed. |
April 18, 2023 - Program Meeting Opener!
The April Program Meeting was held at the Harmony-North Harmony History Center on the Harmony Historical Society campus at 1943 Open Meadows Road, Ashville, NY. A room full of guests heard Ashville General Store's own Jackie Francis talk. Pizza from "the General" was enjoyed and HHS gained more members. The evening was a success! |
