October 18, 2022 - "Three Times Around the World"
On Tuesday, October 18, at 7 PM at the North Harmony Senior Center, attendees of the October program meeting listened to the story of the life and adventures of Alonzo D. Sampson, a Cattaraugus County native who traveled the world on whaling ships. Sam Genco and Karen Livsey were our guides as we listened to his actual experiences that he captured in a book titled - "Three Times Around the World or Life and Adventures of Alonzo D. Sampson that was published in 1867. A pot luck dinner was enjoyed by our guests before the talk and a great time was had by all. |
Sep. 20th, 2022 - "Coops, Spears and Fish Decoys"
On Tuesday, September 20th at 7 PM at the North Harmony Senior Center, attendees of the September program meeting learned about the early history of spear fishing on Chautauqua Lake from Fletcher "Ned" Ward who just published a book by the same title. Fishing spears and fish decoys were on display courtesy of our speaker and everyone enjoyed the tales of those early fisherman who braved the elements throughout the year to fish in Chautauqua Lake. Harmony-North Harmony History Center Open House! The Harmony Historical Society held an Open House on Saturday, September 17 to introduce the Harmony-North Harmony History Center. This expansion increased space for visitors to do research, view more of our collections, and collaborate with others using updated technology which includes video conferencing capabilities. We also recognized the donation of a sawmill by the family of the late Franklin Hanson. It was a beautiful day. Please stop by and see the new space as we are now open on Tuesdays from 1-3 PM. |
"Chautauqua Obscura", August 16, 2022
The Harmony Historical Society's August program meeting held at the North Harmony Senior Center was a success. After a "pot luck" dinner and great conversation, about 25 attendees enjoyed hearing Sam Genco and Karen Livsey's tales of "Chautauqua Obscura". Sam also brought artifacts from his many travels which were available for viewing after the talk. |
HHS Annual Picnic Meeting, July 19, 2022
The 2022 Harmony Historical Society's Annual Picnic meeting was held on Tuesday, July 19 at the North Harmony Senior Citizen's Center at 5377 Stow Ferry Rd, Stow, NY. Attendees enjoyed a picnic style dinner and enjoyed photos of the renovation of the library, historic photos of the area, its residents and collections. |
